Green Bay Area Public School District

About JDAL

The John Dewey Academy of Learning (JDAL) offers an innovative choice for 6th–12th grade students in the Green Bay Area Public School (GBAPS) District. JDAL provides students with the opportunity to thrive in collaborative, interdisciplinary, technology-rich learning environments. Students engage with the world outside the classroom walls by delving into the exciting world of partnerships with Green Bay area organizations and businesses; furthermore, students take ownership of their learning by synthesizing authentic projects that focus on topics relevant to their lives.

I love what JDAL has to offer. Having the ability to get involved with community work, a chance to go in-depth with the career of choice, hands-on experience in the field & having access to college credit, while still in high school. I wish this type of school was around when I was in high school. My child enjoys JDAL and feels that he's apart of another family.

Mission Statement

The mission of the John Dewey Academy of Learning is to provide students with a rigorous project-based curriculum and a safe, caring community in which to learn.  By developing the whole person - academically, professionally and personally - JDAL will assist students in reaching their full potential.

The John Dewey Academy of Learning Vision:

  • A community of teachers and learners who respect and appreciate the diverse strengths and needs of individual members.

  • Students who take ownership of learning and are extensively involved in the creation and implementation of Personalized Learning Plans.

  • Students and staff who are internally motivated to engage in learning as they develop 21st century skills through project-based learning.

  • Flexible instruction and authentic assessments to include self assessment, process assessment, and performance assessment that help students understand the purpose and relevance of learning.

  • A school culture of mutual respect, positive reinforcement, and consistent high-level expectations.

  • Behavior consequences that focus on restorative practice and result in students having a clear understanding of how their behavior affects others and what needs to be done to “repair the damage.”

  • Shared leadership and decision making that result in a sense of ownership, responsibility, and pride in the school community. Leadership is assumed and shared by teachers and students; they do not rely on an administration.

  • Extensive involvement within the community that will provide authentic, meaningful learning opportunities. Identify real world/community issues and problems, establish internships, and connect with mentors.

  • A passionate, collaborative group of educators who share the vision and work together to facilitate exceptional learning experiences for students. The culture of the community supports the teaming process of forming, storming, norming, and performing.
